Track project time: start a timer or log manually

On the project detail page, you can track a running activity with the timer, or manually log work already done. The project is fixed in this flow; you can add a task and a description.

Prerequisites
  • You're signed in to the right organization and have access to Projects.
  • You have access to the organization's time tracking.

Start the timer in a project

Open the project you want and find the Timer card on the right.

  1. Optionally choose a task. For general project work, leave the selection at No task.
  2. Add a description so the entry stays traceable later.
  3. Click Start timer and check the running display.
  4. Click Stop timer once you're done.
  5. Check the saved entry under Time entries.

Log time after the fact

Use Log manually for work already done. For 1 hour and 30 minutes, enter 1 under Hours and 30 under Minutes.

  1. Optionally choose the related task.
  2. Describe the activity and choose the work date.
  3. Enter hours and minutes; the duration must be greater than zero.
  4. Click Add entry and check the entry in the list.

Check time entries and total time

The Time entries list shows project-related entries with description, date, and duration. Total time sums up the project's saved durations, regardless of whether the time is billable. A running timer has its own display; its running duration is only saved once you stop it. If the numbers look off, check the timer and the project assignment first.

Get costs and budget right

The cost display in a project multiplies project hours by the currently stored hourly rate. Budgeting, on the other hand, can factor in billable time, stored billing rates, and, for a retainer, a specific period. Different values aren't automatically a logging error.

How budgets are evaluated is explained in Use Budgeting.

Common pitfalls

  • A manual duration isn't a freely chosen start time

The project form asks for date and duration, and sets the start at 09:00 on the chosen day in your local time zone. If exact start and end times matter, use the detailed flow in the Time tracking module instead.

  • Done tasks are missing from the timer

The timer's task picker hides completed tasks. In Log manually, completed tasks can still be selected too, for example to log something after the fact.

  • Double-check the project assignment

A task alone isn't a reliable stand-in for a time entry's project assignment. The project total counts the time entry's actual project link. Check it for entries logged from other views.

Frequently asked questions

Can I log time without a task?

Yes. Choose No task. The entry still belongs to the open project.

Why doesn't Total time go up every second?

The timer counts live; the project total is based on saved durations. Stop the timer to have its duration counted.

Do I need to log timer time again manually?

No. Once stopped, the time is already saved. An extra manual entry for the same work would log it twice.
