Chat: create channels and direct messages

Every organization with Chat enabled automatically gets three fixed channels. On top of that, you create your own team channels with any number of members, start 1:1 direct messages, and projects automatically get their own channel.

Prerequisites
  • You're signed in; Chat can be enabled per organization — the sidebar only shows organizations where the module is active.

The three automatic channels

  • General — open to every accepted member of the organization, anyone can post.
  • Announcements — every member can read, but only Owners and Admins can post.
  • Admin — visible only to Owners and Admins, and only they are members.

All three are created and kept up to date automatically: if someone is promoted to Admin, they land in the Admin channel automatically the next time it loads; if the role is revoked, they disappear from it again. Renaming, deleting, leaving, and manual member management aren't possible for these three channels.

Create a new team channel

  1. Click + in the sidebar.
  2. If you belong to several chat organizations, choose the organization first — that determines which members are available to pick.
  3. Give it a name (required) and, optionally, a description.
  4. Choose as many members as you want (checkboxes). You're automatically added as channel Admin, everyone else as Member.

Start a direct message

In the same "+" dialog, choose a direct message instead of a channel — here you pick exactly one target person (a radio button instead of a checkbox). If a DM with that person already exists in the organization, Project Manager opens the existing one instead of creating a second.

Project and meeting channels are created automatically

When you create a new project, it automatically gets its own team channel with you as Admin. Likewise, every meeting automatically gets its own chat as soon as a transcript exists.

Hide a channel or organization instead of leaving

The eye icon that appears when you hover over a channel or an organization only hides it from the main list — it lands in the collapsible "Hidden" section below, and you can restore it from there with one click. New messages keep coming in the whole time.

Pin a channel to the top

Channel settings also let you pin a channel so it always sits at the top of your personal list — this only affects your own view, not other members'.

Frequently asked questions

Who can add me to a team channel?

Only an Admin of that channel — usually the person who created it. Only members of the same organization with an accepted invite are available to pick.

Can I have two direct messages with the same person in one organization?

No. Project Manager automatically finds an existing 1:1 DM between two people in the same organization instead of creating a second one.

Why can't I rename General, Announcements, or Admin?

These three channels are system-managed: Project Manager creates them automatically and keeps their name and membership in sync with organization roles. Renaming, deleting, and manually adding/removing members are disabled for them.
