Chat: manage a channel — members, roles, and notifications

Channel settings (the gear icon in the channel header) bring together renaming, member management with three roles, notifications per channel, and — only for your own team and project channels — leaving and deleting.

Prerequisites
  • You're signed in; Chat can be enabled per organization — the sidebar only shows organizations where the module is active.

Open channel settings

Open a channel and click the settings icon in the header. Name, description, member management, and webhooks are only available for your own team and project channels — for General, Announcements, Admin, direct messages, and meeting chats, only notifications and hiding remain there.

Rename and describe a channel

Change the name and description and click Save. Only channel Admins can do this — for every other member, the fields are read-only.

Add members, change role, remove

  1. Click Add member to bring more organization members into the channel — they're added as Member at first.
  2. Use the role dropdown next to a person to set Admin, Member, or Viewer.
  3. Use the remove icon to take a person out of the channel.

Every action automatically posts a system message to the channel (e.g. "X added Y"), so every member can follow the history.

The three channel roles

  • Admin: can post, manage members, rename, create webhooks, and delete the channel.
  • Member: can read and post, but not change settings.
  • Viewer: can only read, never post — Project Manager sometimes assigns this role automatically to the management chain of a newly added member, so managers can see the channel without being invited themselves.

Turn off notifications per channel

The Notifications toggle controls push and in-app notifications for new messages in exactly this channel, independent of your other chats.

Leave or delete a channel

For team and project channels, Leave channel (any member, for themselves) and Delete channel (Admins only, removes the channel for everyone permanently) are available at the bottom. Every other channel type is missing both actions — only hiding remains there.

Common pitfalls

  • No one can undo a deletion

A deleted team or project channel, along with its history, is gone for good. Project Manager explicitly asks for confirmation once before deleting.

  • Meeting chats can't be managed manually in settings

Project Manager adds meeting chat members automatically (the creator plus recognized participants from the meeting) — manual member management, renaming, or webhooks aren't available for this channel type in the settings dialog.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make myself a Viewer?

Roles are always changed by an Admin for other members — there's no self-service, other than leaving the channel yourself.

What happens to messages when I leave a channel?

They stay for the remaining members. Only your own membership — including your notification setting for that channel — is removed.
