Link goals to milestones and tasks

Milestones mark waypoints on the way to a goal. Tasks capture the concrete work. The milestones under Goals are the same entries as in the Milestones module, so changes affect both views.

Prerequisites
  • You're signed in to the right organization and can open Goals.

Create a milestone from a goal

Open Long-term, Medium-term, or Short-term and expand Details on the goal you want.

Assignment
The open goal is assigned automatically. The new milestone starts as Planned and is assigned to the Custom phase in the Milestones module.
  1. Click Add in the Milestones area.
  2. Enter a title and optionally a target date.
  3. Confirm Add.
  4. Check the new milestone under the goal and in the Milestones tab.

Change status from the goal card

The status icon in front of the milestone advances on each click: Planned → In progress → Completed → Delayed → Planned. Switching to Completed sets the completion date; switching to any other status removes it again. The goal's status is unaffected.

See every milestone in one place

Switch to Milestones at the top. Here you'll also find entries with no goal. Filter by All, In progress, Planned, Delayed, or Completed. In this view, clicking the status opens a picker that sets the state you want directly. Use Add milestone to create a new entry with an optional goal and target date.

Link an existing task straight to a goal

Open Details on the goal card and use Link in the Tasks area.

  1. Pick an existing task from the list.
  2. Check the title and status under the goal.
  3. If the task doesn't exist yet, create it in the Tasks module first and reopen the picker.
  4. To remove the link, click the unlink icon next to the task. The task itself is kept.

Tell task-to-milestone links apart

A task can be linked to a goal and to a milestone at the same time. Both links are independent: a task under one of the goal's milestones doesn't automatically appear in the goal's direct task list. In the Milestones tab, clicking the X/Y tasks counter expands the related tasks. To add a milestone link, open the Milestones module and use Add task on the milestone in question.

Settings like phase and description are covered in Use Milestones. Create new tasks in the Tasks module.

Tell deleting apart from unlinking

Removing a directly linked task only clears its goal assignment. Removing a milestone in Goals, on the other hand, deletes the shared milestone for the Milestones module too, with no extra confirmation dialog. Linked tasks are kept under the current database schema and just lose the milestone assignment.

Common pitfalls

  • A task is missing from the picker

Link only shows tasks that aren't done yet and aren't assigned to a goal. Unlink an existing goal assignment first if you want to assign the task to a different goal.

  • Delayed is its own status

A target date in the past isn't the same as the Delayed status. Status filters follow the saved status. Set it explicitly when a milestone slips.

  • Completed milestones don't add to goal progress

The milestone counter shows finished waypoints. The goal's percentage still comes from key results or manual progress.

Frequently asked questions

Are these copies of the milestones from the other module?

No. Both views use the organization's same entries. So status changes and deletions affect the same milestone.

Can a milestone exist without a goal?

Yes. Leave the goal selection empty when creating it from the Milestones tab. The entry stays visible in the central list.

Can a task belong to several goals?

A task has at most one direct goal assignment. An additional milestone link is possible independently of that.
