Create key results and understand goal progress

Without key results, you use a manual progress value. Once a goal has at least one key result, Goals calculates progress from its key results' current and target values. Completed tasks and milestones aren't factored in.

Prerequisites
  • You're signed in to the right organization and can open Goals.

Create a measurable key result

Open your goal's time horizon and expand the card via Details.

  1. Click Add in the Key Results area.
  2. Enter a title, for example Hold 20 customer calls.
  3. Enter a positive target value, 20 in this example.
  4. Optionally add a unit, such as calls, euros, or percent.
  5. Click Add. The new key result starts at a current value of 0.

Update the current value

Click the existing current value in the key result row. Enter the new figure and confirm with Enter or the checkmark. Escape or the X ends editing without saving. The bar and the goal's progress are recalculated from the saved value.

Follow the calculation

For each key result, current value divided by target value counts, capped at 100 percent. The goal shows the rounded average of all key result ratios; every key result is weighted equally.

Key Result A: 10 of 20 calls
50 percent achievement.
Key Result B: 3 of 4 proposals
75 percent achievement.
Goal progress
(50 + 75) ÷ 2 = 62.5 percent, shown as 63 percent. The manual value isn't factored in here.

Use manual progress

If the goal has no key results, open Edit goal via the pencil icon and enter the percentage under Manual progress. Then save. With key results present, this value stays saved but doesn't drive the display. If you remove every key result, the saved manual value is used again.

Remove key results

The trash icon on a key result row deletes that result directly, with no extra confirmation dialog. Check the entry before you click. Removing it changes the average; removing the last key result re-activates manual progress.

Common pitfalls

  • A target value of zero gives no measurable progress

With a target value of 0, the key result is calculated as 0 percent. Use a positive target value. The calculation fits values that rise from 0 toward a target; there's no automatic reversal for goals like reducing an error count.

  • Overachievement doesn't offset other key results

A current value of 30 against a target of 20 counts as 100 percent for the average. So it doesn't make up for missing percentage points on other key results.

  • A new key result can lower progress

A new result starts at 0 and is immediately included in the average on equal terms. Displayed progress can drop as a result, even though existing values haven't changed.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't my manual progress value have any effect?

Once at least one key result exists, Goals uses only their average. The manual value only counts with no key results.

Do completed tasks update the current values?

No. Update key results' current values yourself. Task status and milestone status don't feed into this progress calculation.

Is a goal automatically completed at 100 percent?

No. Set the status to Completed yourself in the edit dialog once the goal is actually finished.
